Pharmacy Rotations

Rotational Experiences:

The PGY1 pharmacy residency year begins with a 5-week orientation period. Throughout the training year, there are 8 rotations with each learning experience being 5-6 weeks in length. The schedule allows for 3 elective rotations.

Clinical On-Call Programs

  • Resident will participate in the following programs as applicable:
    • Pharmacy Dosing Protocols (e.g., warfarin, vancomycin & renal dosing)
    • Pharmacy Patient Education (e.g., CHF patients)
  • Participate in the clinical on-call program
    • Approximately 1 week/month
    • At-home call program

Hospital Practice (Staffing) in the Cambridge Hospital Inpatient Pharmacy

  • Every 4th weekend
  • 1 evening shift per week (~ 5 hours)
  • 1 major and 1 minor holiday
Medication Safety
  • Monthly discussion seminar with Medication Safety Officer
Pharmacy Leadership
  • Monthly seminar with Chief Pharmacy Officer and Pharmacy Leadership Team
  • Journal club presentation
Research Project
  • Resident is the primary stakeholder in a CHA approved quality research project
  • Present research at 2 meetings:
    • Poster presentation (Vizient Consortium Pharmacy Network at the Midyear Clinical Meeting)
    • Platform presentation (Eastern States Residency Conference)
  • Final presentation to Pharmacy Enterprise and collaborators
  • Final project written in a publishable format

Periodic Experiences (Required):

Medication Use Process

  • Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee work and presentations:
    • Conduct a medication use evaluation
    • Review a new medication for formulary consideration

Teaching

  • Teaching Certificate Program
    • Monthly seminar
    • Resident will write a teaching philosophy, create a teaching portfolio, and lead weekly small group sessions for 1 semester for pharmacy students
  • 1 ACPE (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Continuing Education) approved lecture to pharmacy staff
  • 2 case conferences
  • 3 inservices (e.g., physicians, nurses, pharmacists)
  • Write a Pharmacy CHAnnel Newsletter article
